Cancel insurance after your donated car has been picked up and the title has been handed off, not before. If pickup is still ahead, keep coverage active. Canceling early can leave you responsible for an uninsured loss while you still legally own the car, and some states penalize an insurance lapse on a vehicle that is still registered.
Before canceling, handle any required plate or registration step. Then ask your insurer to make the effective date the pickup/title-transfer date.
The right cancellation sequence
Confirm pickup and title hand-off
First, make sure the car is no longer in your possession and the title has been handed off as part of the donation. Do not cancel insurance because pickup is scheduled or expected. Until the vehicle is picked up and the title hand-off is complete, you may still be responsible for damage, theft, or an accident involving that vehicle.
Handle plates and registration
Next, take care of plates and registration if your state requires that step before insurance cancellation. Rules can work two ways: some states require plates to be surrendered or registration to be canceled first; others allow insurance cancellation after the vehicle is no longer registered to you. If unsure, check the New Jersey DMV before you cancel coverage.
Call with donation date
Call your insurer once pickup, title hand-off, and any required plate or registration action are done. Give the donation date as the pickup/title-transfer date. Ask the representative to use that date as the effective date for removing or canceling coverage, so you are not paying for days after the vehicle left your control.
Remove or cancel coverage
If you have a multi-car policy, ask the insurer to remove only the donated vehicle. Confirm that the rest of your policy stays active for the other cars and drivers. If this was your only car, cancel the auto policy after the transfer date; if you expect to own or drive another vehicle soon, ask about continuous-coverage options.
Ask for premium refund
If you prepaid your premium, ask whether a prorated refund is due from the effective cancellation or removal date. Many insurers refund unused premium, but the amount depends on your policy terms, billing status, and effective date. Ask how the refund will be issued and when you should expect to see it.
Save all written confirmation
Before ending the call, ask for written confirmation showing the vehicle, the effective date, and whether the policy was canceled or the car was removed. Save that confirmation with your title, pickup receipt, plate or registration records, and donation paperwork. Also keep our separate release-of-liability guide with your records for reference.
What your insurer may ask
Have a few items ready before you call. The insurer may ask for the policy number, vehicle year, make, model, VIN, pickup date, and the date the title was handed off. Say clearly that the vehicle was donated through Revive the Ride and that you need the donated vehicle removed, or the policy canceled if it was your only insured car. Ask the representative to read back the effective date. It should match the pickup/title-transfer date unless a required plate or registration step must be completed first.
Common questions
Can I cancel insurance the day before pickup?
No. Keep insurance active until pickup and title hand-off are complete. If the car is damaged, stolen, or involved in an incident before pickup, canceling early can create an uninsured loss while the car is still yours. It can also create a registration-related lapse problem in some states.
What if my donated car is on a multi-car policy?
Ask the insurer to remove only the donated vehicle. Do not cancel the whole policy unless you no longer need coverage for any vehicle or driver on that policy. Confirm that liability, collision, comprehensive, and any other coverage for your remaining vehicles stays in place.
Will I get money back after canceling?
You may receive a prorated refund if you paid premium for coverage after the effective removal or cancellation date. The refund depends on your insurer, your billing status, and your policy terms. Ask for the refund amount, how it will be sent, and written confirmation.
